Common Questions
Maid Hiring FAQ
Answers to the questions Singapore families ask us most often about hiring a domestic helper.
How long does it take to hire a domestic helper?
For fresh helpers from Indonesia or Myanmar, the process typically takes 4–8 weeks including work permit approval, medical checks, SIP, and travel. Transfer helpers already in Singapore can be placed in as little as 1–2 weeks.
What nationalities of helpers do you provide?
We currently place helpers from Indonesia, Myanmar, and the Philippines. Each nationality has different strengths and we'll help match you based on your household needs.
What is included in your agency fee?
Our fee covers work permit application, medical check-up, Settling-In Programme (SIP), airport transfer, 26-month Tokio Marine insurance, and unlimited replacement within 12 months.
What is the replacement guarantee?
If your helper doesn't work out for any reason within 12 months, we'll replace her at no additional agency fee. We want every placement to be a long-term success.
Can I interview the helper before confirming?
Yes, we arrange video or in-person interviews so you can meet the helper and ask questions before making a decision. We typically shortlist 2 to 3 candidates based on your requirements.
Do you handle transfer helpers?
Yes. Transfer helpers are already in Singapore and looking for a new employer. The process is faster and involves a transfer of employer, updated work permit, and a short handover period.
Is AJS Global MOM licensed?
Yes. AJS Global Pte Ltd is a fully licensed employment agency under the Ministry of Manpower (MOM), Licence No. 17C8901.
Do you provide helpers for eldercare or newborn care specifically?
Yes, we match helpers with relevant experience for eldercare and newborn/infant care, not just general housekeeping. Let us know your specific needs when you enquire.
What if I'm hiring a helper for the first time?
We guide first-time employers through every step, from choosing the right type of helper to handling the paperwork. See our First-Time Employer Guide for a full walkthrough.

What does the monthly levy cost?
The monthly Foreign Domestic Worker levy is set by MOM. Standard rate is $300/month. A concessionary rate of $60/month applies if you have a child under 16, an elderly parent above 67, or a family member with a disability living in the same household. Rates are subject to MOM updates, always verify at mom.gov.sg.
Do I need to buy insurance for the helper?
Yes, MOM requires all employers to purchase a minimum of $60,000 personal accident insurance and $15,000 medical insurance per year. AJS Global includes 26-month Tokio Marine insurance as part of our placement package.
What is the Settling-In Programme?
The SIP is a mandatory one-day orientation for helpers coming to Singapore for the first time. It covers employment rights, safety, and expectations. AJS handles the booking. The $75 fee is paid by the employer.
Can I trial a helper before committing?
There is no official trial period under MOM rules. However, we encourage a gradual handover in the first 1 to 2 weeks and stay available during that period. If genuine issues arise early, our replacement guarantee applies.
What if the helper wants to go home mid-contract?
Helpers can request early repatriation, but this requires proper notice and MOM notification. We guide both parties through the process if it happens and help you find a replacement quickly.
How do I renew the work permit?
Work permits are valid for up to 2 years. AJS will remind you about 3 months before expiry and assist with the MOM renewal application. Renewal takes about 1 to 2 weeks if there are no issues.
Should I hire a fresh helper or a transfer maid?
Transfer maids are already in Singapore and can start in 1 to 2 weeks. They have a verifiable Singapore track record you can check with previous employers. Fresh helpers take 4 to 10 weeks to arrive but give you a clean slate with no preformed habits. If you need someone urgently, transfer is usually the only realistic option. If you have time and want to set your own household culture from the start, fresh can work well.
How much does it cost to hire a maid in Singapore?
The total 2-year cost typically ranges from $25,000 to $40,000 or more, covering the agency fee, 24 months of salary ($520 to $900 per month depending on nationality and experience), monthly levy ($300 standard or $60 concessionary), food, and the occasional renewal or replacement. The agency fee covers work permit, medical check, SIP, insurance, and the 12-month replacement guarantee. Contact Norma for a full itemised quote.
What is the concessionary levy and do I qualify?
The concessionary FDW levy is $60 per month instead of $300. You qualify if you have a child under 16, an elderly parent or grandparent aged 67 or above, or a family member with a disability living in the same household. Only one concessionary rate applies per household even if multiple qualifying members are present. Check the current eligibility criteria at mom.gov.sg.
What happens at the end of the 2-year contract?
You can renew your helper's work permit for another 2 years, let the permit expire and end the arrangement, or transfer her to another employer. AJS assists with renewals. We will follow up around 3 months before expiry. If you choose not to renew, you are responsible for arranging your helper's return flight home.
