Work Permit Renewal for Your Helper: Step-by-Step Guide (2026)

FDW work permits are valid for 2 years. Renewing on time keeps everything legal and uninterrupted. Here is exactly what to do and when.

Most employers only go through this process once every 2 years and forget the steps in between. This guide covers the renewal process for foreign domestic worker (FDW) work permits in Singapore, including the medical check, insurance, security bond, and MOM submission. If you work with AJS Global, we can handle this for you entirely.

The 6 steps to renew your helper's work permit

01

Apply 3 months before expiry

MOM allows renewal applications to be submitted up to 3 months before the work permit expires. Apply as early as possible to avoid any gap in her legal status. You can apply via MOM's online portal using your Singpass.

02

Arrange the medical check

Your helper must undergo a medical examination at a Singapore-registered clinic within 3 months before the renewal. The check includes a general health screen and tests for conditions MOM requires. We can help arrange this.

03

Renew or purchase insurance

A new FDW insurance policy (at least $15,000 personal accident coverage and $60,000 hospitalisation) must be in place from the renewal date. If your current policy ends before the new permit period, purchase a new one before submitting.

04

Submit the renewal online

Log in to MOM's Work Permit Online portal. Select your helper's name, confirm her details, upload documents if required, and pay the application fee. Approval is usually granted within 1 to 3 working days.

05

Pay the security bond

A $5,000 security bond is required for helpers from most nationalities. If you maintained a valid bond during the current permit period, it typically carries over. If you are using an insurance company bond, verify it renews automatically.

06

Collect the new In-Principle Approval

Once MOM approves, you receive an In-Principle Approval (IPA) letter. Your helper does not need to leave Singapore for a fresh permit. The IPA confirms the renewal and the new permit is issued digitally.

Apply 3 months early, not 3 weeks

The most common mistake employers make is starting the renewal process too late. Medical appointments can take 1 to 2 weeks to get. Insurance processing takes a few days. MOM approval typically takes 1 to 3 working days but can be longer. Starting 3 months before expiry gives you comfortable buffer for all of this.

Common questions about renewal

What happens if I miss the renewal deadline?

If the work permit expires before renewal is completed, your helper is overstaying illegally. This can result in fines and complications for future applications. Apply at least 3 months early to avoid this.

Does my helper need to return to her home country to renew?

No. Unlike some visa types, FDW work permit renewals do not require the helper to leave Singapore. The entire process is handled online by the employer.

Can I change the employer details or address during renewal?

Yes. If your address has changed, update it in the MOM portal. If you are transferring the permit to a different family member or adding a co-applicant, that can be done at renewal.

How much does work permit renewal cost?

MOM charges a $35 work permit application fee. You will also need to account for the medical check (typically $40 to $80 depending on the clinic) and insurance renewal costs.

Can I decide not to renew and let her go?

Yes. If you do not wish to renew, you must cancel the work permit and arrange for her to return home. You are responsible for her repatriation airfare unless an employment contract states otherwise. Cancel well before expiry to avoid overstay.
